Abstract:

The general objectives focus on biological studies of the lifespan of some species that are part of the stocks exploited by Spanish fleets in the Atlantic in the ICES area . The specific objectives are focused on the study of the growth and reproduction parameters, ie mainly reproduction, growth and population structure. This biological information ismanaged for the species such as european hake, whiting, european conger eel , pollack ,forkbeard, blueling, redfish john dory, etc. and some other which are discarded by the spanish fleet. These species are part of the requirements for DCF. All this makes that biological aspects such as growth and reproduction of these species will be partially addressed in terms of their importance in the catches and therefore a special emphasis will be on the study of: Growth . This means a dynamic and continuous process which basically involves two steps: the estimation of individual age and the estimation of growth parameters. For them it is necessary to perform a series of tasks which include several methods to process and interpret the calcified tructures chosen for each species (otoliths , vertebrae , ilicios , etc), in order to estimate the age. Late to get the relationship between age and fish size to finally get growth patterns of the species in the exploited population. This information requires good levels of precision and certainty and for that intercalibration exercises among age readers are conducted routinely. Uncertainty analysis are performed to give the biological parameters based on certain levels of precision that are required. It is also necessary to conduct validation studies. (confirmation of the accuracy of a method to determine the age) This task has been undertaken for european conger eel species by mean a pilot tagging experiment during the Demersal survey conducted by IEO in 2013. The aim of this pilot experiment is to know the actual growth rate of the species and its migratory pattern. Take into account the availability of this annual survey, it will be planned to continue working on this pilot project in order to increase the number of individuals tagged. To ensure the reception of recaptures an advertising campaign will be conducted by media. Reproduction studies will be undertaken for the target species: estimation of maturity ogives for calculating the size and age at first maturity, histology analysis to calibrate the macro and micro estimation of the maturity stages, sex – ratio, etc. Length-weight , fish length - otolith size, live weight- gutted weight , etc: biometric relationships of the species, etc. Studies of gene flow from the stock of European hake in collaboration with the Unversity of Vigo will be carried out by using the large otoliths collection available in the CO de Vigo.
