Abstract:

Biological collections constitute a detailed historical record of present and past life on our Planet. Over the last 20 years, they have been significantly recognised as valuable evidence of nature´s wealth. The increasing concern for conserving biodiversity has generated even more interest about biological reference collections as invaluable tools to enhance our knowledge of our ecosystems and to provide scientific resources for taxonomic and systematic studies. Biological collections enable the testing of evolutionary and predictive models of the Earth’s biodiversity, the species' ecology, environment, and biochemical and molecular studies, among others. At present, the IEO reference collections include thousands of invertebrates and fishes, distributed in the Oceanographic Centres of Malaga, Tenerife, Cadiz and Vigo. These collections come from quite a few different geographic regions, being worth remarking those from the Atlantic coasts of Africa, due to their abundance and to the presence of numerous rare deep water species. Other important collections belong to the Mediterranean fauna collected from the early XX century, and invertebrate collections from every world ocean including the Antarctic Ocean. The FAUNAMARINA project aims the creation, development and maintenance of these collections of the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO). The first step is the correct taxonomic identification and revision of species of fish and invertebrates that contain for the dissemination of biodiversity inventory in different marine areas, while the availability of this information will be a key support to scientific research applied to the development sustainable resource management and biodiversity conservation of marine ecosystems. The IEO collections have also an associated catalogued photographic database of marine species, already used by IEO researchers to produce internal guides or scientific papers. The information contained in the collections is in electronic and graphic format as part of the Zoorbar 2.0 software, distributed and supported by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Spanish node. Zoorbar 2.0 is designed for the computerization and the management of Natural History collections, and allows the widespread exportation of biodiversity data to internationally created portals such as the GBIF. The Collections from Malaga, Cadiz and Tenerife Oceanographic Centers are registered in the biodiversity collections of the GBIF in Spain. The Marine Fauna Collection from Malaga Center (CFM-IEOMA; www.ma.ieo.es/cfm) and the Crustaceans Decapods and Stomatopods from Cadiz Center (CCDE-IEOCD) are as well Data Provider on this organization (http://www.gbif.es). This Project is into the framework of the Program 03 (Assessment of Fisheries Resources from Eastern Central Atlantic) as a Research assistance project including the different topics of this Program: Biology, Data-Base Management, Marine Reserves and Ecology. Furthermore, it also provides data on marine biodiversity to the IEO. The organization and an adequate management of these collections will allow the IEO to provide support and assessment to biodiversity studies. In addition, the IEO faunal reference collection will constitute a basic reference for typifying benthic and demersal communities of different shelf and slope areas in benefit of the application of an ecosystem-based approach to the resources management.
