Abstract:

Gulf of Cadiz fishery resources are exploited by one of the major fisheries of the Spanish coasts, fisheries which have a great socio-economic impact in certain localities of the Andalusia Atlantic coast. All the research work carried out on these resources up to date has mainly focused on single-species stock assessments (carried out within the expert groups on stocks’ assessment of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, ICES), biological studies (i.e., reproduction, growth and feeding patterns) of many species of commercial interest and the monitoring of their biomass and abundance population levels and their distribution patterns by direct surveying (research cruises). Some of the most important target species of these fisheries are short-lived, with their population levels being highly impacted not only by the fisheries but also by the environmental forcing. The main objective of the project is to improve the knowledge on the relationships between environmental parameters/indices and the population levels of some of these commercial short-lived species which has been taken as reference. Such selected species are anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), white shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) and common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), species that satisfy the selection criteria of belonging to different exploited habitats (pelagic, demersal, benthic) and being targeted by different fisheries. Biological, oceanographic and hydro-climatic data bases will be explored and analysed, and their inter-relationships then modelled by using different statistic modelling techniques. Those data bases containing geo-referenced information will be analysed and modelled within a geographic information system (GIS) environment.
